Homeless people deserve kindness
People experiencing homelessness deserve kindness, deserve to feel human: It’s estimated 1 in 100 people in NZ are homeless, living in temporary accommodation, in uninhabitable housing, or without shelter at all, sleeping on concrete, a bench, a car. Homelessness statistics in New Zealand are shocking.
If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one: At times I feel small in comparison to these large-scale issues, but our awareness and continued education will help inform the future decisions we make. Even though the complexity of poverty in the world, I’m glad I’m not missing my chance to help, at least one at a time. And I’d like to encourage you to help me to help:
Under the Stars is a group of people who help the homeless in practical ways. They work on the values of kindness and compassion without judgement. Many people in the streets have a mental illness. Under the Stars not only provide meals but connections of unconditional love that helps to support healing for those who are separated from our society and discriminated.
I’ve added Under the Stars “Give a little” donation page to my Bio. With the funds, Laura & team will buy food ingredients for volunteers to cook at home and serve a warm meal at the venue. Also toiletries are very much needed; clean hair, skin and teeth are a right, not a privilege. Personal hygiene is crucial for our dignity, self-respect and mental health. The organisation also helps people to get birth certificates, open a bank account, find a job.
I know not everybody is in a position to donate money right now, but we can help in so many ways, wherever we are in the world. Do you need a little inspiration? - When you see someone begging in the streets, make eye contact, smile or say hello
- Each time you buy a new piece of clothing, donate an old one
- Give someone a job - Offer a bus pass
- Make two lunches and give one away
- Volunteer
- Don’t judge
